Shandos Cleaver.

My WHS journey started properly in 2017, at the start of a multi-year trip to Europe. My husband and I had planned to travel "slowly", but that was quickly forgotten as we criss-crossed Europe ticking off WHS.

Complicating matters was the fact that we were travelling with our dog, a Miniature Dachshund called Schnitzel. Despite not being allowed into many sites, he's probably the dog who's visited the most WHS!

We're pictured here visiting the picturesque town of Edam, in the Netherlands - on a day where we visited the Beemster Polder and part of the Defences of Amsterdam sites.

In the years since, we've made multiple overseas trips targeting WHS, most recently a 3-month trip to South America - finally visiting the continent for the first time after multiple attempts!

If you're also travelling with a dog, check out my blog, Travelnuity: Dog-Friendly Travel.

Cerrado Protected Areas

Cerrado Protected Areas

Our visit to the Cerrado Protected Areas was nearly a near miss for us. Arriving at the Movida rental car counter at Brasilia Airport at lunchtime, it ended up taking over 3 hours to pick up our car, mainly because their system didn't like our credit card so couldn't take a deposit (although expect pick-up to be slow regardless). Finally, after trying every alternative and calling our bank, they accepted our debit card instead. (Make sure you have a second credit card if hiring a car in Brazil, just in case!) So, it was a rather late arrival at our pousada in Alto Paraiso de Goias, not helped by a truck crash on the outskirts of Brasilia and endless speed bumps on the rural highway

Quebrada de Humahuaca

Quebrada de Humahuaca

Originally when visiting Argentina, we planned to hire a car to visit the Quebrada de Humahuaca. However, a quick search online showed that there were multiple reasonably priced day trips leaving Salta visiting the valley, so we skipped sourcing a rental car and booked two tickets on a day trip.

We booked our day trip with Nordic Travel through Viator, for about $50 USD per person. Our bus seated about 25 passengers and we had a bilingual guide (although only four of us didn't speak Spanish) plus lunch was included.

Paraty and Ilha Grande

Shandos Cleaver Australia - 07-Sep-22

Paraty and Ilha Grande

There's a lot of options for how to visit the Paraty WHS, which is not surprising considering it is a Mixed site and consists of a number of different locations, including the offshore island of Ilha Grande.

Like previous visitors, our main base for our visit was the town of Paraty. We stayed for three nights just outside the historic centre in one of the many guesthouses. The town is a popular getaway spot for the nearby cities of Rio and Sao Paulo. The weekend after we visited, despite being late winter, nearly everything was booked out for a cachaca festival.

Portobelo-San Lorenzo

Shandos Cleaver Australia - 23-Jul-22

Portobelo-San Lorenzo

Initially when planning our stopover in Panama City (an easy and cheap option with COPA), we had planned to visit the Panama WHS and the Portobelo part of the Portobelo-San Lorenzo WHS, using public transport. But after seeing how easy driving is in the country (a whole swathe of the country was basically part of the USA for years), we decided to hire a car for the day to visit San Lorenzo and the canal.

Visiting San Lorenzo is easier than it used to be, thanks to the building of a new bridge north of Gatun, the Puente Atlantico. It's an impressive bridge to drive across, and there's no toll. Continue down the road past Fort Sherman, past the old military booth where no-one waved us down

Fray Bentos

Fray Bentos

Former industrial sites can be divisive World Heritage Sites. I'm not against industrial sites (partially as they can be interesting to photograph), although a multitude of mining and planned town sites being inscribed can be monotonous. Fray Bentos though stands out as a unique and key site for international meat exports (stock cubes and canned corned beef). In the modern era, you forget how big a development these were. The products from this factory were one of the most important exports of South America, shipped to Europe and used on expeditions of exploration and to supply armies in both WWI and WWII.
