Randi Thomsen Profile

Together with Svein, we travel around the world to explore and enjoy new WHS, countries, culture and great food.  In 2010 we become WHS travellers, when we started planning our trips in order to visit WHS.

Hunting for WHS makes us go off the beaten tracks and brings us to new and exciting places, trying to understand the OUV.  Travel is more than seeing new places, it’s  about learning history, new culture and enjoy excotic food and drinks.

Hire Benkal, Megalithic Site (T)

Hire Benkal, Megalithic Site (T)

Visit December 2022 together with Philipp Peterer. On our way from Pattadakal to Hampi, we decided to check out this new tent site. So far no one in the community had been here. Not very popular among Indians either. We didn't meet a single person during our two-hour visit to site.

The first step was to figure out how to get there. Google maps is not to be trusted on this

Dholavira: A Harappan City

Dholavira: A Harappan City

This is a new site and has very few visitors from our community so far. Dholavira is an old Harappan city dating back to 3000 years BC, so we didn’t expect to see much. But we were surprised!

We, that includes Svein and Phillip, were first on site this December morning and we even had to open the gate. The first structure was a very large reservoir in front of the castle’s eastern gate, impressive!  It seems like the ancient civilization living here did very well in mastering the water.

Chongoni Rock Art

Randi Thomsen Norway - 01-Oct-22

Chongoni Rock Art

Visit in July 2022.

This place is rather remote and gets very few visitors.

The rock art of Chongoni is of international importance because it has large and well-preserved rock paintings sites belonging to rare African rock art traditions: by Chewa farmers and by the hunter gathering BaTwa Pygmies. The Chongoni area contains some of the finest examples of Pygmy, rock arts in Africa and more than half of all of central Africa’s farmer rock art. Chongoni has one of the world’s greatest concentrations of rock art known to have been made by women.

Lake Malawi

Randi Thomsen Norway - 10-Sep-22

Lake Malawi

July is a very good time of the year to visit this site. The temperature is simply perfect! Two nights on Mumbo Island, which is in the south end of the lake about one hour from Cape MacClear, is just an adventure. The Island has never been populated and is still in its natural state with a thick covering of miombo woodland and ancient fig and baobab trees. The island gives you a Robinson Crusoe feeling, unspoiled in the middle of “an ocean”.

The lodge is run by Kayak Africa, which have a lodge in Cape MacClear as well. The camp has 6-7 cabins which is down to earth, with simple cabins build of reeds, timber, thatch and canvas, bucket showers and eco-loos. The place has neither electricity, wifi or telephone service, but the personal service is impeccable!

The Central Slave and Ivory Trade Route (T)

The Central Slave and Ivory Trade Route (T)

Visit July 2022

Bagamoyo is one on several sub-sites in the tentative site of “The Central Slave and Ivory Trade Route”. It is now a small town, 1,5 hours north of Dar es Salam. We booked a trip by car with driver through our travel agent.

It is a historical town with ruins of early settlement from 1300 century (Kaole), but the town is more famous for its part in slave trades. This was the end of the Central Slave Route with slaves from the area around Lake Tanganyika, Kongo, Uganda. The journey by foot, chained and with little food and water, lasted up to 6-8 months. Many of them never made it all the way to Bagamoyo. Here they were examined and stored. The strongest were sent to slave market in Zanzibar, the rest to plantations along the shore. In late 1800 the trade was abolished by various countries, but trade was secretly going on until 1920’s when it was totally abolished in Tanganyika
