Les « coules » de Petite Valachie (T)

Les « coules » de Petite Valachie (T)

Some reviewers have already noted that the 'coules de petite valachie' TWHS is quite close to the already inscribed Horezu monastry WHS. So is this just a minor sidestep on the way to something more worthwhile, or can it stand on its own ? My initial reaction was indeed "Ah, it is so close, might as well spend a couple of minutes there". However, the site at Maldaresti is actually quite a nice heritage area, with two of the mysterious 'cula', an old church, a little heritage house and some nice green surroundings. The culas itself are interesting, too, being a mixture of a country house and a fortress from a time when the area was seemingly so dangerous that everything needed to be fortified - castles, villages, churches, houses

Ensemble de grottes à concrétions du Sud de la France (T)

Ralf Regele Germany - 27-May-23

On the way towards the Mont Perdu WHS from the french side, I made a visit to the "Gouffre D'Esparros" cave, which is part of the obscure TWHS "Ensemble de grottes a concretions du Sud de la France". The cave is a bit in the middle of nowhere. However, the GPS should find it, the roads are fine and the infrastructure for the visit is actually pretty good. Despite visiting on a long weekend with nice weather, I was the only visitor for the early tour, so I had my own private tour guide. The cave itself is quite nice (but I have a soft side for caves). Although the cave has a rather vertical layout, the tour path itself was completely horizontal and easy to walk. The stalagmites were nice but not too numerous

Alpine and pre-alpine meadow and marsh landscapes (T)

Alpine and pre-alpine meadow and marsh landscapes (T)

The Allgäu - a region renowned for its beauty, its marvelous mountainsides, rolling hills and mountain meadows full of flowers. Nothing of this matters, though, as this WHS proposal is only about some specific spots with flat, grassy marshlands. It is one of these sites where it is difficult to point out what to see and why it does matter. I choose to visit the 'Murnauer Moos' area, as it has a rather well specified location, easy access points and a hiking trail going all through the interesting area. So what's to see ? Mainly a lot of brown grass and some puddles. The on-site signs talk a lot about biodiversity and endemic species - none of which will be easily perceivable by the common visitor. Honestly, I walked the three hour trail and found nothing that looked remarkable

Mothia and Lilibeo Island: The Phoenician-Punic Civilization in Italy (T)

Mothia and Lilibeo Island: The Phoenician-Punic Civilization in Italy (T)

I visited Lilibeo, which is an archeological area in Marsala at the westmost edge of sicily. It is easier to reach than Mothia, as there is no ferry needed. Despite the title of this TWHS, Lilibeo is not an island. The site comes with a nice little museum, but doesn't seem to be too popular. The main claim to fame is the long history reaching back to phoenician and punic settlements, and the official description heavily points to these otherwise underrepresented civilizations. However, there are actual not many artifacts from punic times visible on site. There is a large area with various excavations, but most are from roman or medieval times. There are remains of the city wall, a roman road, remains of the roman city buildings, and various tombs from later periods

Dzongs: the centre of temporal and religious authorities (Punakha Dzong, Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, Paro Dzong, Trongsa Dzong and Dagana Dzong) (T)

Dzongs: the centre of temporal and religious authorities (Punakha Dzong, Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, Paro Dzong, Trongsa Dzong and Dagana Dzong) (T)

Now these sites are really screaming to be a WHS. The dzongs of Bhutan are iconic buildings, they are of critical importance for the history of Bhutan, they are a blueprint for the whole bhutanese architecture and they are also just really beautiful buildings ! They are impressive from the outside, all with quite picturesque locations, and they are impressive from the inside, as they are full of decorated courtyards and colorful temples. And all are still actively used as religious and administrative centers, with wonderful festivals inside of them. Now that's how to be a worthy WHS site, you hunting grounds and vineyards !
I visited three of the Dzongs, had a look at the forth and didn't found out much about the fifth. Here are my thoughts on the individual locations:
