Redwood

O Mammutbaum, o Mammutbaum! How towering are your branches. The giant redwoods are truly majestic trees, and the Redwood National and State Parks in California are a superb location to admire the sheer size and beauty of these ancient evergreens. As referenced in other reviews, this World Heritage Site consists of Redwood National Park, as well as Del Norte Coast, Jedediah Smith, and Prairie Creek state parks. A drive along the California coast on Route 101 between Eureka and Crescent City will take one right through the heart of these protected groves; it is an extremely memorable experience.

Gwaii Haanas (T)

Gwaii Haanas (T)

Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site, located on the southern islands of Haida Gwaii, is a proposed extension to SG̱ang Gwaay, a World Heritage Site marking the cultural heritage of the Haida people who live throughout Haida Gwaii. I have to say right off that I am in favor of such an extension, since the Haida are letting SG̱ang Gwaay return to nature, which means that the remarkable memorial and mortuary poles there will one day be only memories.

What would an extension provide from a cultural perspective? Well, in addition to SG̱ang Gwaay, Gwaii Haanas includes four other Watchmen sites: villages with resident Haida interpreters who live on site during [...]

SGang Gwaay

SGang Gwaay

The poles are still standing. It has been over fifteen years since the last review of SG̱ang Gwaay, but the remarkably carved memorial and mortuary poles that led to this site being inscribed on the World Heritage Site are still in place. Weathering and decay are taking their natural toll on the village, as the fine details on the poles continue to fade. As far as the Haida people who populate the islands of Haida Gwaii are concerned, however, this is an expected part of life and should not be prevented.

Christiansfeld

Christiansfeld

I know much has been written about Christiansfeld already, but I don't yet see a review from the perspective of one who has visited a component of the proposed extension to the World Heritage Site before visiting Denmark. In the spring of 2021 I took a road trip to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to learn more about the Moravian Church Settlements Tentative World Heritage Site extension to Christiansfeld. I came away from the trip with a much richer understanding of the role of the Moravian Church in early America, and the innovations they brought to the young country. The trip gave me high hopes for my visit to Christiansfeld when I traveled to Denmark last month, but unfortunately I left disappointed.

Skogskyrkogarden

Skogskyrkogarden

I suppose I should thank Haruki Murakami for putting the tune Norwegian Wood in my head when I visited Skogskyrkogården last month. Nevermind the fact that I was actually in Sweden, in a bucolic corner of its largest city -- the tune stuck with me as I wandered through the pines and birches, passing rows of graves. This was perhaps the most lasting memory of my visit to this Woodland Cemetery, and it was a good one.

I arrived at Skogskyrkogården in the golden hours of the second longest day of the year. A small waterfall tucked into the entry wall provided an appropriate sense of repose, allowing me to leave a busy day of sightseeing in the past. Skogskyrkogården opens up into a large grassy field, and the granite cross and the Woodland Crematorium and its chapels were illuminated by the setting sun as I approached them. The only other visitors I saw were coming down from Almhöjden, the meditation grove at the top of the hill to the right of the entrance, so I headed up there next to survey the grounds while they were still well-lit. Birds were calling in the trees, and I had a clear view of the crematorium reflected in its adjacent pond
