The Architectural Works of Alvar Aalto - a Human Dimension to the Modern Movement (T)

The Architectural Works of Alvar Aalto - a Human Dimension to the Modern Movement (T)

Alvar Aalto was kind enough to build his most important works in Finland close to World Heritage Sites or along the route between two inscribed sites. Very prescient of him. So I could easily include all thirteen locations of this TWHS in my round trip through Southern and Central Finland. I visited Finland in early June 2022 and almost all Aalto sites that are open to the public already offered tours. Unfortunately, Villa Mairea was still closed (tours were only available from the third week of June).

The Ringed Seal Archipelagos of Lake Saimaa (T)

The Ringed Seal Archipelagos of Lake Saimaa (T)

"You have to look for a rock lying on a rock," was the advice from our guide as we peered through our binoculars in search of a Saimaa ringed seal. Unfortunately, the best time to observe the seals was already over at the beginning of June. The best chances to see them are during the moult in May. "They don't like rain and they don't like wind", was another piece of information that our guide shared with us. Well, it was warm and dry and almost windless on our three-hour sunset tour. But only at the end, when I had almost given up on it, did we get to see two of these cute animals.

The Prosecco Hills

Hubert Austria - 09-Apr-22

The Prosecco Hills

Oh no, not another vineyard. That was my first thought when the Prosecco Hills were inscribed on the World Heritage list in 2019. Not really an enthusiastic reaction. But is it justified? Well, vineyards are an over-represented category. But we are in Italy, so good food can be expected and I can taste a wine I didn't know well before. Reasons enough to spend a long weekend in the Veneto and tick off a new WHS. So in September 2021, I set off on a 5-hour drive to the Prosecco Hills.

The inscription was highly controversial, a secret ballot was needed to overrule the "not inscribe" recommendation by ICOMOS in 2018. One year later, an amended proposal with a significantly reduced core zone was inscribed. The focus is on the scenic landscape with its steep vineyards and small hilltop villages. The production sites and wine cellars are not explicitly mentioned in the description and obviously do not contribute to the OUV of the site. In this respect, the Prosecco Hills differs, for example, from the French "Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars". The larger villages at the foot of the steep hills are not included, nor are the eponymous towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene

The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier

The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier

"I’m struggling to understand how an original Le Corbusier building could be in that state of disrepair" was the comment from meltwaterfalls when I posted this photo of the Cité Frugès in our WhatsApp group. And I was shocked too when I visited Pessac in June 2021. To be fair, I must admit that the photo shows the worst example of disrepair. But there were a few more houses that appear to have been uninhabited for a long time and are in urgent need of renovation. And the photo also shows that the public areas, the streets and pavements are not well maintained, the whole neighbourhood looks a bit run down. However, the majority of the housing units are inhabited, some would benefit from a new coat of paint but all in all most of them are in good condition

Danube Limes

Hubert Austria - 12-Dec-21

Danube Limes

To sum it up right at the beginning: There is not much to see at the Danube Limes. Most of the remains are hidden under fields and meadows or have been overbuilt by later settlements and newly founded towns. There are hardly any larger visible structures. Often only some foundation walls are visible or the original remains are preserved as components of later buildings. On several trips in the last years, since the Danube Limes appeared on the tentative list in 2015, I have visited most of the locations with visible remains. The nomination files provide detailed descriptions of each site and what you can see there. For those who don't want to go through more than a thousand pages, I will summarise my visits in this review
