Back to Ancient Messene after many years.  What a difference!  Today (in 2022) it easily competes with Delphi and Olympia as a well kept, well presented and rich archaeological site that deserves to be included in the World Heritage List.  It received the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage in 2005 & 2011.  

Ancient Messene was an important Hellenistic, Roman and Early Byzantine city.  The site is stretched out in the valley below Mount Ithome, 28 km north of Kalamata in the Peloponnese.  The first organised settlement on Mount Ithome dates back to the 9th century BC - with earlier human presence in the Late Neolithicum and Early Bronze Age.  After a series of wars with Sparta between the 8th and 5th centuries BC the settlement on the mountain was given up by its inhabitants.  In 369 BC General Epameinondas from Thebes founded the city below in the valley as the capital of independent Messenia and built according to the urban planing principles of Hippodamus of Miletus

Daphni, Hosios Loukas and Nea Moni of Chios

If it were not located next to a busy modern day national road one could imagine the Daphni Monastery to be located in Shakespeare’s Athenian forest with elves, kings and queens enjoying a pleasant Midsummer’s Night on the lush meadow among the pine trees behind one of the Greek capital’s most impressive buildings of the Middle Byzantine period.  The site was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990, together with the Monastery of Hosios Loukas near Delphi, and Nea Moni on the island of Chios.

Abydos, city of pilgrimage of the Pharaohs (T)

Abydos is a gem on the tentative list (since 2003).  Together with Heliopolis, Hermopolis and Amarna, the site was one of the most important religious centres in pharaonic Egypt.   It was a place of worship, pilgrimage and served as a burial place over millennia.  The main attraction is the temple of Seti I (father of Ramses II) and the adjacent Osireion, a rather mysterious underground cenotaph for the Egyptian god of fertility and resurrection.

Archaeological Site of Sagalassos (T)

Sagalassos is situated in the Western Taurus mountains, about 120 km north of Antalya, in the Turkish province of Burdur (Ağlasun). The city is embedded in the Taurus Mountain chain, with the Mediterranean Sea to its south and the Anatolian plateau to its north, located in a mountainous terrain with forests, steep valleys and rivers.  We visited this tentative UNESCO site in July 2020 after it was reopened following the Corona crisis with the usual health precautions.  As it is about 1500 metres above sea-level the temperature was pleasant even in the middle of summer with a light cooling breeze.

The Tombstones of Ahlat the Urartian and Ottoman citadel (T)

Ahlat is located in Turkey’s eastern province of Bitlis, west of Lake Van - or as it is called by the locals the Sea of Van - approximately 44 kilometres north of the town of Tatvan, from where it is possible to take a minibus.

In October 2018 we travelled there in about two hours by car coming from the city of Muş.  Ahlat is set in a dramatic scenery with mountains, steep valleys and the shores of Lake Van; it has the feel of an open-air museum with its pieces of art from several periods scattered across the landscape.  Ahlat, a small town of 20,000 people has much more to offer than the cemeteries it is known for.  It is a recent member of the Cittaslow network, promoting lifestyle and culinary delights.  Make sure you stay for lunch or dinner to enjoy food cooked from fresh local ingredients
